Better price than most. Hard to review an annual publication, but exactly what I wanted and expected.
It is perfectly fine.If you need a "bomb proof" data source on a vessel use back up methods. This is the soft cover version of the hard cover government Nautical Almanac. I have owned both versions and always buy the less expensive soft cover type.
Given that the computations involved are done by government agencies, operating "on the publics dime" so to speak, and that the paid ads in the commercial edition might go a long way to defraying production costs, correct me should I be in error here, the $30 in round numbers, shipping included charge for the Commercial Edition seems somewhat out of line. The Commercial Edition, a "Paper Back/Soft Covered volume contains a few pages of paid ads, data and format is the same in each edition. I've used the 2007 and 2008 commercial editions of the Nautical Almanac, and have found the presentation of data to be pretty much straight forward, and clear.I've not seen the 2009 edition as yet, however given that it contains the same data, in the same format as that of the Government Edition, which is hard covered and without the few pages of ads found in the commercial edition, I would think that for those who lean toward old fashioned celestial navigation, perhaps a vanishing breed, it will serve as well as did previous editions. The following additional thoughts come to mind, and are NOT CONTENT RELATED, rather they address marketing of the commercial edition. The "Government Edition", hard covered and without any ads sells at Amazon for $36, shipping included.
